The Hawaii bar exam

The next Hawaii bar exam is on February 23-24, 2027, at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu. Applications are due by November 1, and the exam fee is $500, as of October 2026. Hawaii isn't a UBE state: it uses NCBE's MBE, MEE and MPT plus its own questions, and it moves to NextGen in July 2028.

What's on the Hawaii bar exam

NCBE's guide lists four parts: the 200-question MBE, the MEE essays, the MPT tasks and 15 multiple-choice questions on the Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct. Hawaii is on NCBE's list of states taking up the NextGen exam from July 2028.

You also need the MPRE, and you file NCBE's Hawaii Character and Fitness Application along with your bar application.

How do you apply for the Hawaii bar exam?

  1. File the Hawaii bar application by November 1 for February, or April 1 for July. Pay the $500 exam fee online by credit card. It isn't refunded or moved to a later exam.
  2. Submit NCBE's Hawaii Character and Fitness Application and attach a copy to your Hawaii application. NCBE charges its own fee for it.
  3. If you'll type, register your laptop with ExamSoft, which charges a laptop fee.
  4. Watch for the Order Granting Permission to Sit, filed two to three weeks before the exam.

Questions go to the Board of Examiners at baradmissions@courts.hawaii.gov or 808-539-4977.

Exam days in Honolulu

The February 2027 exam is in the Regency and Monarch Rooms of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, 2259 Kalakaua Avenue. Check-in is at 7:00 a.m., and late arrivals may not be seated. The court says to use valet at the hotel or self-park at the Sheraton Waikiki, not the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

Hawaii bar exam results, retakes and reciprocity

July 2026 results came out on September 18, 2026, when the Hawaii Supreme Court filed a notice naming everyone who passed. NCBE reports that 73% of 160 takers passed, and 83% of first-timers.

Hawaii sets no limit on attempts, according to NCBE's guide. It doesn't take transferred UBE scores, since it isn't a UBE state, and NCBE lists only limited admission on motion. One example is Rule 1.17, for attorneys who are spouses of US Uniformed Services members.
