The Oregon bar exam

Oregon gives the NextGen bar exam. It was one of the first states to switch, in July 2026. The Oregon State Bar runs the Oregon bar exam for the state Supreme Court, and the next one is on February 23-24, 2027, with applications due by November 16, 2026. As of October 2026 the fee is $1,000 for first-time applicants.

NextGen in Oregon, and the passing score

The July 2026 exam was Oregon's first NextGen exam, and February 2027 is NextGen too. The Oregon Supreme Court set the passing score at 615 for July 2026 only. For NextGen exams after July 2026, it's 620, on NextGen's 500 to 750 scale.

Who can sit, and the MPRE

You need a JD or LL.B. from an ABA-approved law school. A graduate of another US law school can sit after being admitted in another state with similar rules and practicing for three of the last five years. Students at ABA-approved schools can sit if they'll finish their degree within 120 days of the exam.

Oregon's MPRE pass mark is a scaled 85. You can take the bar exam first, but you must pass the MPRE within 36 months of passing the bar to be admitted.

Is there a way into Oregon without the bar exam?

Yes. The Supervised Practice Portfolio Examination (SPPE) lets you qualify through supervised work instead of the written exam. You need a job offer from a qualified employer and a supervising attorney before you apply. Then you log 675 hours of work, at least 20 hours a week, and build a portfolio the Board of Bar Examiners grades: eight written work products, two client sessions, two negotiations and an MPRE pass (or a journaling alternative), plus training hours. The first fee is $1,000.

Oregon bar exam results and score transfers

The State Bar posts results and an alphabetical list of passing applicants on its site, and sends official letters through the admissions portal. For July 2026, 344 of 429 applicants passed, 80.2%. First-timers passed at 90% and repeaters at 44%. See how other states did on our pass rates page.

A UBE or NextGen score from another state can transfer if it passes Oregon's standard, is from July 2017 or later, and is no more than 36 months old when you apply. With an older score, you need to have practiced law for two of the last three years. The fee is $1,350. Lawyers can also apply on motion: NCBE's guide lists 2 years of practice in the last 4. Oregon sets no limit on attempts.
