What is a good GRE score?

It’s the score the programs you apply to look for. ETS doesn’t define a good GRE score, and the test has no pass mark. What ETS does publish is the mean score of test takers by the graduate field they plan to study, so you can compare yourself with people aiming for the same kind of program.

GRE scores by intended graduate field

These are college seniors and graduates not enrolled in college who tested from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025. ETS’s more detailed table splits them further: computer and information sciences averaged 151 in Verbal and 162 in Quant, mathematics and statistics 154 and 165, and psychology 152 and 149.

Is there a passing score on the GRE?

No. You can’t pass or fail the GRE. Each program decides how to use scores. ETS tells schools that using a minimum GRE score as the only reason to admit or reject someone isn’t good practice, and it urges them to publish the range of their middle 50% of admitted students rather than an average or a minimum. If a program lists a minimum GRE score, that’s the program’s own rule.

Is 310 a good GRE score?

ETS doesn’t label scores high, low or competitive, but its percentile table tells you where a score stands. Some examples, with Verbal and Quant split evenly (the totals are our own sums, not ETS scores):

Verbal + QuantVerbal percentileQuant percentile
150 + 150 = 3003923
155 + 155 = 3106437
160 + 160 = 3208250
165 + 165 = 3309567

Set those against the field table and your programs’ published ranges to decide what a good GRE score is for you.

GRE scores for grad school, law school and business school

ETS says the General Test is accepted at thousands of graduate, business and law schools. For law schools, ETS offers a GRE Comparison Tool that estimates an LSAT score from your Verbal and Quant scores. ETS doesn’t publish score guidance for particular programs such as PA school, so check each program’s admissions page.
