GRE Quantitative Reasoning: the math on the GRE

The math stops at about a second algebra course: arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, with no trigonometry or calculus. GRE Quantitative Reasoning has 27 questions in two sections, 12 in 21 minutes and then 15 in 26 minutes, and you get an on-screen calculator. It’s scored from 130 to 170.

What math is on the GRE Quantitative section?

Not tested: trigonometry, calculus, writing proofs and inferential statistics.

AreaWhat it includes
ArithmeticDivisibility, factors, primes, remainders, odd and even numbers, exponents and roots, estimation, percent, ratio, rate, absolute value, the number line, decimals and sequences
AlgebraExponents, factoring and simplifying, functions, linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, simultaneous equations, word problems, and graphs with intercepts and slopes
GeometryParallel and perpendicular lines, circles, triangles (including 30-60-90), quadrilaterals and other polygons, similar figures, 3-D figures, area, perimeter, volume, the Pythagorean theorem and angles in degrees
Data analysisMean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, quartiles and percentiles, tables and graphs, probability, normal distributions, and counting with combinations, permutations and Venn diagrams

GRE Quant question types

The first Quant section is of average difficulty. Do well on it and the second section is harder; struggle and it’s easier.

  • Quantitative comparison: decide whether Quantity A or B is greater, they’re equal, or you can’t tell. The four choices never change.
  • Multiple choice, one answer: five choices.
  • Multiple choice, one or more answers: you get credit only if you pick every correct choice and nothing else.
  • Numeric entry: no choices. Type an integer or decimal in one box, or a fraction in two.
  • Data interpretation sets: several questions about one table or graph.

Using the GRE calculator

The on-screen calculator is basic. ETS suggests using it for tedious work such as long division and square roots, not for quick mental math, and estimating first so you can spot a typing slip. You can’t bring your own calculator unless it’s an approved accommodation.

Math conventions to know

  • Geometric figures are not necessarily drawn to scale, so don’t measure them by eye.
  • Coordinate grids and charts such as bar, line and circle graphs are drawn to scale.
  • All numbers are real numbers, and figures are flat unless the question says otherwise.

Free GRE math practice and review

ETS’s free Math Review PDF covers every topic above, and ETS matches each one to free Khan Academy videos (some of which go further than the GRE, into trigonometry). ETS also publishes sample questions with explanations, the Math Conventions PDF and a sheet of 14 problem-solving strategies. Ten of our 20 practice questions are Quant.

The GRE Mathematics Subject Test is a separate exam on undergraduate math, about half of it calculus.
