GRE Subject Tests: Mathematics, Physics and Psychology

As of October 2026 there are three GRE Subject Tests: Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. Each GRE subject exam is meant for people with an undergraduate major or a strong background in that field, and it’s only given in two-week windows. Chemistry has been discontinued, and ETS lists no Subject Test in engineering or computer science.

When are the remaining GRE subject exam dates for 2026-27?

You can test at a center or, in most locations, at home. As of October 2026 the fee is $199, and the Fee Reduction Program halves it for eligible test takers in the US and its territories. You can take a Subject Test once every 14 days.

How GRE Subject Tests are scored

Each test is scored from 200 to 990 in 10-point steps, though each one uses only part of that range. Your score is based on the number of questions you get right, converted by equating, and ETS says to compare it only with scores on the same Subject Test.

For Physics and Psychology tests taken from September 2023, subscores are percent correct, from 0 to 100. Tests taken before that used a 20 to 99 scale.

TestTest takersMean score
Mathematics5,770688
Physics4,760733
Psychology2,278584

Means are for everyone who tested from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025.

How a Subject Test day differs

  • There’s no on-screen calculator, and personal calculators aren’t allowed unless approved as an accommodation.
  • There’s no break.
  • You can’t see your scores at the end; they come on the reporting date.
  • You choose your four free score recipients when you register, not at the end of the test.

GRE subject test practice and the end of Chemistry

ETS offers a free fact sheet or practice book for each Subject Test. Our 20 practice questions are in the General Test style, not Subject Test style.

The Chemistry Test was discontinued in 2023; its scores can still be sent for five years.
