Average GRE score and percentiles

For everyone who took the GRE General Test between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2025, the mean was 151.39 in Verbal Reasoning, 157.62 in Quantitative Reasoning and 3.46 in Analytical Writing. That average GRE score comes from ETS’s 2026-27 interpretive data, based on about 790,000 test takers. Your score report puts a percentile next to each score: the share of that group who scored lower than you.

What is the average GRE score in each measure?

These are everyone who tested from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025. People who got No Score on a measure are left out of that measure.

GRE percentiles for every Verbal and Quant score

This is the table ETS uses on score reports in 2026-27. Where it says not reported, there were no test takers below that score to rank against. The essay’s percentiles are on the Analytical Writing page.

Why a Quant percentile is lower than a Verbal one

Quant scores run higher on average, so the same number ranks lower in Quant. A 160 beat 82% of test takers in Verbal but only 50% in Quant. ETS says scores from different measures shouldn’t be compared directly because each is scaled separately, so compare their percentiles instead.

Is there a percentile for a combined GRE score?

No. ETS’s tables give a percentile for each measure only, not for Verbal plus Quant. A “total score percentile” you see elsewhere was worked out by someone else. The same goes for a GRE score percentage: the General Test doesn’t report a percent correct, and the percent figures on your report are percentiles.

How to interpret GRE scores

Percentiles always come from the three most recent testing years, so the same score can get a slightly different percentile next year, even though ETS says it reflects the same ability.

The three measures overlap only partly. In ETS’s data, Verbal and Quant scores correlate at .44, Verbal and Writing at .52, and Quant and Writing at just .08. ETS also publishes mean scores by the graduate field test takers plan to study, which is a fairer comparison than everyone at once.
