GRE vs GMAT for business school

ETS says more than 1,300 business programs accept the GRE, and that most top MBA programs take it alongside the GMAT. GMAC, which runs the GMAT, says almost all business schools now accept both, and that more business schools globally accept the GMAT than the GRE. For GRE vs GMAT scores, ETS doesn’t publish a conversion table. It suggests comparing your GRE scores with the median GRE scores in each school’s class profile, or asking the admissions office.

GRE vs GMAT side by side

GMAT figures are from GMAC, which runs the GMAT, as of October 2026. On the GRE side, you also get an on-screen calculator in both Quant sections, the second Verbal and Quant sections adapt to how you did on the first, official scores arrive in about 8 to 10 days, and scores stay valid for five years. Our GMAT guide covers the rest of the GMAT side.

Is there a GRE to GMAT score conversion?

Not from ETS. Its GRE vs GMAT page says it doesn’t publish a score conversion table. It points you to the median GRE scores in each target school’s class profile instead, or to the school’s admissions team.

Which is easier, the GRE or the GMAT?

No official body measures that. ETS says neither test is objectively harder. GMAC’s April 2026 GMAT vs GRE article says there’s no simple answer and that it depends on your background, and it adds that you get 25% more time per question on the GMAT than on the GRE.

What you can compare is format: the GRE has an essay, a calculator in every Quant section and the freedom to change any answer within a section, while the GMAT has no essay, a calculator only in Data Insights and up to three answer changes per section. A free POWERPREP test or GMAC’s free Official Practice Exam 1 shows you how each one feels.

GRE scores for MBA applicants

ETS publishes mean scores for test takers who plan to study business, and separate interpretive data for people aiming at an MBA. Our page on good GRE scores has the business figures next to the other fields.
