Driver education in Minnesota

If you're under 18, Minnesota requires driver education before your permit and your provisional license: 30 hours of classroom instruction plus behind-the-wheel lessons. You can take the classroom part at a public or private school, a driving school, or online with a DVS-approved program. At 18 or older, driver education isn't required.

The three cards

  • Blue Card: you've finished the 30 classroom hours and are enrolled in behind-the-wheel. Bring it to the written test.
  • Pink Card: you're in a concurrent course and have done the first 15 classroom hours. This also lets you take the written test.
  • White Card: you've finished both classroom and behind-the-wheel. Bring it to the road test.

The parent class

Approved driver education programs offer a supplemental parent class. If a parent or guardian completes it, your Supervised Driving Log needs 40 hours instead of 50, still with 15 at night. Bring the completion certificate to the written test and the road test. DVS also links to the Parent's Supervised Driving Program from eDriverManuals, a guide for parents teaching at home.

Finding a course

DVS posts lists of approved online classroom programs, licensed commercial driving schools, and public and private school programs. Home-schooled students can use the DVS home school materials with a Home School Affidavit.
