When to renew
- Licenses expire on your birthday. After 21, you renew every four years.
- You can renew up to nine months early without losing any time.
- If you're under 21, your license expires on your 21st birthday. You can renew no more than 60 days before.
- Permits and provisional licenses run two years from the day you applied.
How to renew
- Fill in the online pre-application to save time at the counter.
- Find a driver's license office that does renewals with the DVS office search.
- Bring your current Minnesota license, your Social Security number, proof of any name change and the fee. Bring proof of address too if you've moved and have a REAL ID or enhanced card.
- Pass the vision screening and have your photo taken.
Lost, stolen or damaged licenses
Go in person to an office that handles duplicates and ask to replace your license. You can pre-apply online first. A duplicate is $26 and cheaper than a renewal, but it doesn't push back your expiration date. If you change your name or address, you must apply for a duplicate within 30 days.
If your license has expired
- Expired more than one year but less than five: you must pass the written test and vision test again.
- Expired more than five years: bring primary and secondary documents and retake both the written and road tests.
- In active military service with a valid Minnesota license, you don't have to renew until you're discharged, then within one year.
