Booking a Minnesota permit test or road test

You need an appointment for both the Class D written test and the road test in Minnesota. Book either one through DVS online services. For road tests, the manual also gives a phone number: 651-201-7777. Renewals, duplicates and REAL ID applications aren't tests, so you do those at a driver's license office rather than an exam station.

Schedule your written or road test

  1. Open DVS online services and choose to schedule a written or road test.
  2. Pick an exam station and a time.
  3. Fill in the online pre-application no more than 30 days before your appointment.
  4. Bring the confirmation page and the documents it lists.

Road test appointments

  • Under 18, you can book the road test once you've held your permit six months. At 18 it's also six months, and at 19 or older three months.
  • Missing a road test costs $40, and a late cancellation $20.
  • In winter, road tests may be delayed until streets are passable and test areas are cleared.
  • The manual lists phone booking for road tests in the metro area at 651-201-7777.

Tests that don't need an appointment

The motorcycle written test is first come, first served at exam stations. The motorcycle skills test does need an appointment, booked online under Driver Services.

Renewal, duplicate and REAL ID visits

These happen at driver's license offices, which include deputy registrars and driver's license agents as well as DVS offices. Pre-apply online first to cut your time at the counter. Use the DVS office search to find one that handles your transaction.
