Minnesota · Permit test

Can you take the Minnesota permit test online?

No. Minnesota's Class D written test is given in person at DVS exam stations, on paper or a computer. A lot of the rest is online, though: booking the test, the pre-application, teen classroom driver's ed through approved programs, and your MyDVS account. License renewal still means an office visit.

What you can do online

  • Schedule or reschedule a Class D written test or road test.
  • Fill in the pre-application for a permit, license or ID, and upload REAL ID documents to pre-verify them.
  • Set up a MyDVS account to check your license status, request your certified driving record and message DVS.
  • Read or print the Minnesota Driver's Manual and the DVS practice test.
  • Renew your vehicle registration.

Minnesota driver's ed online

Teens can do the 30-hour classroom part of driver education online, but only with a program DVS has approved under Minnesota Statute 171.396. DVS publishes the list, which listed about 40 programs in its October 2025 revision. Behind-the-wheel lessons still happen in a car with an instructor. If a program covers several states, DVS accepts it only if you used its Minnesota-approved course.

License renewal isn't fully online

DVS says you renew at certain driver's license locations, where they check your vision and take your photo. You can start with the online pre-application to save time. Some people serving long sentences in jail or prison can renew by mail.
