The OTR and COTA content outlines
| Domain | Share |
|---|---|
| OTR 1: Evaluation and assessment | 23% |
| OTR 2: Analysis, interpretation and planning | 23% |
| OTR 3: Select and manage interventions | 38% |
| OTR 4: Competency and practice management | 16% |
| COTA 1: Collaborate and gather information | 27% |
| COTA 2: Select and implement interventions | 55% |
| COTA 3: Uphold professional standards and responsibilities | 18% |
Each domain breaks down into tasks and the knowledge each task needs, and every exam item is classified against them. NBCOT bases the outlines on practice analyses, studies of entry-level practice that it runs every five years; the latest were in 2022.
Which NBCOT study guide should you use?
NBCOT’s own Study Guide covers the exam, test-taking strategies, study habits and practice questions with answers, rationales and references. It costs $60 as a coil-bound hard copy or $40 as an ebook, and the two have the same content, though you can’t print the ebook. The electronic version is part of the StudyPack, and its items are different from the ones in NBCOT’s practice tests. NBCOT ships hard copies only to US addresses.
The TherapyEd guides by Rita P. Fleming-Castaldy are a separate company’s books, compared on the study options page.
The textbook list NBCOT uses
NBCOT’s items aren’t written from textbooks. Certified OTRs and COTAs write them from the content outline, and NBCOT uses textbooks to check that the content is accurate. It publishes separate OTR and COTA lists as a representative sample, always means the latest edition, and says using any of them doesn’t guarantee a pass. These are on both lists, among others:
- Willard and Spackman’s occupational therapy (Gillen and Brown)
- Pedretti’s occupational therapy: Practice skills for physical dysfunction (Pendleton and Schultz-Krohn)
- Occupational therapy for physical dysfunction (Dirette and Gutman)
- Occupational therapy essentials for clinical competence (Jacobs and MacRae)
- Introduction to orthotics: A clinical reasoning and problem-solving approach (Coppard and Lohman)
- The intentional relationship: Occupational therapy and use of self (Taylor)
