NBCOT exam prep and study options

The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) writes both certification exams, the Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR) and the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), and it also sells study tools of its own under the name Aspire. NBCOT says it doesn’t require, approve or endorse any prep course or study material, and calls its own tools one option. Its material comes first in the list, then NBCOT exam prep books, question banks and courses from TherapyEd, TrueLearn and Pass the OT, with the prices on their sites in October 2026.

How much NBCOT exam prep do you need?

NBCOT’s answer is that there’s no magic answer. It says only you can decide, based on how you learn, your academic strengths and weaknesses, your fieldwork and your resources, and that a realistic, well-planned study schedule can help you feel more prepared. Students tell NBCOT they spend about six weeks studying.

Its own five steps start with a test date and end with study tools from a trusted source. They’re set out on the study plan page, with the outline shares to weight your weeks.

What to check before you pay for NBCOT prep

  • That it follows the 2022 content outlines, which every OTR and COTA exam has used since January 2, 2024, and the current item types: scenario sets on the OTR exam, six-option multi-select items on the COTA exam.
  • That you’re buying the right version. NBCOT, TherapyEd, TrueLearn and Pass the OT all sell OTR and COTA products separately.
  • How long access lasts compared with your test date. TrueLearn sells 30 to 365 days and lets you wait up to 365 days before you start; NBCOT’s StudyPack lasts until you pass.
  • The refund terms. NBCOT gives no refunds, returns or exchanges on its study tools or workshops.

NBCOT review courses and tutoring

TherapyEd runs two-day OTR prep courses, with a course finder you can filter by month and state. Tuition is $330 with its Review & Study Guide included, and TherapyEd says you can retake the course free if you take it and don’t pass. It also offers online one-to-one tutoring and free weekly online office hours.

NBCOT’s own course is the one-day feelReady Workshop, run in person or online, where you work through practice questions and start a study plan. Pass the OT lists group tutoring among its subscription features and sells private tutoring separately.

Review books for the OTR and COTA exams

TherapyEd’s National Occupational Therapist Certification Exam Review & Study Guide, now in its 10th edition and written by Rita P. Fleming-Castaldy, combines a content review with three complete practice exams. Its book for occupational therapy assistants (OTAs), the National OTA Certification Exam Review & Study Guide, is in its 5th edition. Both are TherapyEd’s books, not NBCOT’s.

NBCOT’s own Study Guide and the textbook list NBCOT checks its items against are on the study guide page.
