How do you study for the North Carolina hazmat practice test?
Read Section 9 of the manual, on hazardous materials, then answer its review questions and reread anything you miss. The manual NCDMV posts is the AAMVA July 2014 edition, and NCDMV says it isn’t a substitute for a truck-driver training program.
You get one try at each knowledge test per day. If you haven’t passed the general knowledge test after three tries, another application fee buys three more. The manual says you don’t need an appointment for the knowledge tests, though NCDMV’s booking site does offer a Commercial Driver License appointment.
Getting a commercial learner’s permit
You must be 18, or 21 for interstate driving or hazmat, and hold a valid Class A, B or C license. At a driver license office you take the vision, traffic sign recognition and CDL knowledge tests. Bring proof of age and identity, your Social Security number, two proofs of residency if you’re a U.S. citizen or one legal presence document if you’re not, and proof of NC liability insurance.
The CLP lasts 180 days and can be renewed once for another 180. With it, you drive only with a licensed CDL holder of the same class or higher, with the same endorsements, in the front seat.
CDL fees
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| CDL application | $51.50 |
| Class A, B or C CDL | $25.50 a year |
| H, N, P, S, T or X endorsement | $5.00 a year each |
| M (motorcycle) endorsement | $3.05 a year |
From the handbook’s fee schedule, revised May 2025 and marked subject to change.
From permit to CDL
- Hold your CLP for at least 14 days.
- Finish entry-level driver training with a school on the federal Training Provider Registry. NCDMV says it usually takes about 4 weeks.
- Book the skills test by phone, and bring a commercial vehicle like the one you’ll drive, your license and your unexpired CLP.
- Pass the vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control and on-road parts before the CLP expires, then finish at a driver license office.
The CDL arrives by mail within 20 business days. The H, N, T and X endorsements need only a knowledge test, while P and S also need a skills test.
