Is the NC DMV open on Saturday? Offices and hours

Not on a regular schedule. The handbook says most driver license offices are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and some in smaller towns open only on certain days. NCDMV last opened 20 offices on summer Saturdays in 2025. In February 2026 it ended its federally funded 7 a.m. openings and said extended hours, including Saturday service, would depend on future funding, so check whether your NC DMV office is open on Saturday in NCDMV’s office locator before you plan a visit.

How do you find an NC DMV office near me?

Use NCDMV’s office locator and choose driver license offices. License plate agencies are separate offices for plates and registration, and they don’t take appointments. Before you go, you can check current wait times at VisitDMV.nc.gov. NCDMV says its estimates aren’t guarantees, and the wait starts when you check in at the front desk.

New offices keep opening. Tabor City’s opened on October 5, 2026, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with basic road tests but no CDL or motorcycle skills tests. NCDMV says offices in Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, Concord and Camp Lejeune are due in 2027.

  • Charlotte South
  • Clayton
  • Durham East

They handled licenses and ID cards, renewals and duplicates, address changes, REAL IDs, and road tests for people who had already passed the knowledge tests. No appointment was needed. In February 2026, NCDMV said it hopes to bring Saturday service back if funding allows.

Skip the trip if you can

NCDMV asks customers to do renewals, duplicates and address changes online when they’re eligible. If you do need an office, an appointment saves the wait, or you can check in by phone as a walk-in and wait for a text.
