NC license check: your status, points and driving record

To see your own license status, including points, log in to MyDMV with your license number, date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number. For an official copy, order your driving record online, by mail or at two offices. An NC license check on someone else needs a valid reason under driver privacy law.

How do you check your license status in NC?

Log in to MyDMV. You need a North Carolina license or ID issued after January 2000, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number, or your I-94 or alien registration number. NCDMV says your account shows your license status, including the points on your record. Insurance companies use their own point system, which is separate.

Ordering your driving record

ItemFee
Certified copy, online or by mail$18.00
Non-certified, full history, online$12.75
Non-certified, three years, not online$12.75
Non-certified, seven years, not online$12.75
Address history, not online$16.75

Fees are from the handbook, revised May 2025, which marks them subject to change. It says three- and seven-year records are normally used for insurance and jobs, and a certified record is usually what a court asks for.

To order online you need the driver’s first and last name, date of birth, NC license or ID number, and a Social Security number, ITIN or U.S. visa number. Online records come as PDFs. Every request uses form DL-DPPA-1, and mailed requests take 10 business days from when NCDMV gets them. Checks or money orders go to NCDMV, signed.

Checking someone else’s license

Anyone with a valid reason under the North Carolina Driver Privacy Protection Act can request a person’s record, as long as they give the details needed for the search. If it isn’t your own record, you must show your own valid NC license or ID. To release your record to someone else, you sign form DL-DPPA-2, which comes in English and Spanish.

In person, take the forms and payment to Raleigh Central Services at 4121 New Bern Ave., using the Vehicle Registration door, or to the Huntersville License Plate Agency at 12101 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Rd. Requests for five records or fewer are filled on the spot.

Points and suspension

Twelve points in three years can get your license suspended: 60 days the first time, 6 months the second and a year after that. Once you’re reinstated, your old points are canceled, but 8 more in the next three years can bring another suspension. At 7 points on the 12-point scale, you can ask for a driver improvement clinic, which takes off 3 points and can be used once every five years. If you find a mistake on your record, send NCDMV a message with your full name, address and phone number.
