Can you do a DMV license renewal in NC online?
Yes, if you qualify, from six months before to two years after it expires. You need your license number and Social Security number. NCDMV’s main renewal page says non-REAL ID licenses can now be renewed online twice in a row, and a REAL ID can be renewed online a second time in a row if you’ve had an in-person visit with a new photo since your last renewal. Its renewal details page still says online renewal is every other time, so if you renewed online last time, check before you count on it.
You must renew in person if:
- Your license is suspended, or you owe NCDMV money
- You have a restriction other than corrective lenses, or a “24” restriction on a full provisional license
- You’re renewing a CDL, a regular Class A or B license, a limited provisional license or a learner permit
- NCDMV has a U.S. government legal presence document on file for you
Renewing at an office or kiosk
At a driver license office, bring your current or expired license. NCDMV’s rule has in-person renewals take the road signs and vision tests. If you’ve lost your license, bring two documents proving your identity and proof of your Social Security number.
Self-service kiosks have the same limits as online renewal. NCDMV is piloting them at select Harris Teeter stores.
Renewing from outside North Carolina
If you’re living outside the state for at least 30 days in a row, you can renew a standard license by mail once in your lifetime. Active-duty military stationed outside North Carolina can do it twice, back to back. A mail renewal is temporary: it expires 60 days after you come back, or on the license’s expiration date if that’s sooner. CDLs can’t be renewed by mail.
You need a Class C license expired less than two years, and a photo on file from the last eight years (NCDMV notes “less than age 65” beside this). The handbook adds a vision statement signed by a licensed physician. Its May 2025 list asks for a photo from the last five years and sets an age limit of 72, so check the out-of-state renewal packet before you mail anything.
How long a renewed license lasts
A license issued between ages 18 and 65 lasts 8 years. From 66 it lasts 5 years. It expires on your birthday.
