What can you do on My NC DMV?
On myNCDMV, the payments site, you can:
- Renew a driver license or state ID, if you qualify
- Order a replacement or duplicate license or ID, including after you move within the state
- Renew a vehicle registration or order a registration card
- Order your driving record
- Upgrade a teen license: Level 2 to Level 3, and a provisional license to a Class C at 18
- Order personalized and specialty plates
PayIt charges $3 per online transaction plus a 1.85% card processing fee, and NCDMV says the state doesn’t collect or benefit from it. Several services in one session cost one $3 fee. You can check out as a guest on the website, but the myNCDMV app needs a profile with an email address. Online services are down every Sunday from 4 a.m. to noon for maintenance. If you have no bank account or card, any NCDMV office can do the transaction.
What is MyDMV in NC?
MyDMV is where you view and manage your own driver license and vehicle registration details. To log in you need a North Carolina license or ID issued after January 2000, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number, or your I-94 or alien registration number. NCDMV’s suspension page says your MyDMV account shows your license status, including the points on your record.
Can you take the NC permit test online?
No. NCDMV gives the vision, signs and knowledge tests in person at a driver license office, and teens need a parent or guardian there. The handbook says the online system can’t be used for a first license or ID card, or for a first REAL ID. Your permit is mailed within 20 business days of the visit.
Studying online is free: the handbook and NCDMV’s sign sheets are PDFs on ncdot.gov.
The official NC DMV website
NCDMV’s pages are on ncdot.gov/dmv, and the handbook gives the address NCDMV.gov. Appointments are booked at skiptheline.ncdot.gov, and current office wait times are at VisitDMV.nc.gov. On your bank statement, myNCDMV card payments show as “PAYIT* NC DMV” and e-checks as “PayIt, LLC.”
