Oklahoma drivers ed online and in person

Online driver education in Oklahoma means the parent-taught program. Service Oklahoma describes it as correspondence study through approved providers, and its August 2026 list names 12 of them, each with a website. It's 30 hours of classroom work plus 55 hours behind the wheel with a parent. Oklahoma drivers ed online counts as driver education for the GDL, but unlike a school course it doesn't waive the written test.

The kinds of driver education Service Oklahoma accepts

  • A public secondary school driver education course.
  • A course at a nonpublic school certified by Service Oklahoma.
  • A commercial driver training school. Service Oklahoma lists 110 approved schools, and 83 of them also give license tests.
  • A Service Oklahoma-certified parent-taught course.

How does Oklahoma drivers ed online work?

  1. Pick a provider from Service Oklahoma's list of approved parent-taught providers. Each one charges for the course.
  2. Apply for parent-taught driver education online with Service Oklahoma. The student must be at least 15 to start the classroom part.
  3. Get the learner permit before any behind-the-wheel lessons. At the permit visit, bring the Service Oklahoma-approved parent-taught affidavit and the course purchase receipt.
  4. Complete the 30 hours of classroom work and 55 hours of driving. The permit must be with you during every lesson.

The parent or guardian teaching must have a valid license and a clean recent record: no suspension, citation or certain convictions in the past 12 months, among other conditions on Service Oklahoma's learner permit page.

What finishing driver education changes

  • At 15, it's what lets you get a learner permit at all.
  • You can move to the intermediate license at 16 instead of 16 and a half.
  • You can move to the unrestricted license after 6 months on the intermediate instead of 12.
  • A public school or commercial completion certificate waives the written test. A parent-taught one doesn't.
  • Adults who finish a school course and hold a permit 30 days can take the drive test with a designated examiner.

The Work Zone Safe course

Since November 1, 2023, everyone under 18 must complete the free online Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course before the intermediate license. It's not driver education, and it doesn't replace it. Bring the certificate to your drive test.
