How to get an Oklahoma driver's license

Under 18 you go through three stages: a learner permit, an intermediate license and then an unrestricted one. At 18 or older you can skip the permit, pass the written test and take the drive test as early as the next business day. Either way you end up with a Class D license, the regular Oklahoma driver's license for cars, vans, RVs and trucks under 26,001 pounds.

The three stages for teens

StageEarliest ageWhat you need
Learner permit15 (in driver education), or 16Pass the vision and written tests, or show a driver education certificate that waives the written test
Intermediate license16 with driver education, 16 and a half without180 days on the permit, 50 hours of driving (10 at night), no traffic convictions, a Work Zone Safe certificate and a passed drive test
Unrestricted license16 and a half6 months on the intermediate license with driver education, or 12 months without, and no recent convictions

The person supervising your 50 hours must be at least 21 and have been licensed at least 2 years. A parent or guardian signs the Affidavit of Driver Training, or it's notarized.

Intermediate license limits

  • You may drive from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The limit doesn't apply when you're driving to or from school, church or work, or when a licensed driver 21 or older sits in the front seat.
  • You may carry one passenger, or only people who live in your household, unless a licensed driver 21 or older is in the front seat.
  • A moving violation keeps you at your current stage until 6 months after the conviction, the manual says.
  • Until 18 your license is probationary, and Service Oklahoma can cancel or suspend it for any moving violation.

How do you get an Oklahoma driver's license at 18 or older?

You don't need a permit. Bring your documents, pass the vision and written tests, then take the drive test, which you can do as early as the next business day. You pay $42.50 when you pass, plus $4 for each failed test, as of October 2026.

If you'd like practice first, you can get a learner permit and hold it 30 days. If you also finish a driver education course at a public, private or commercial school, you can take the drive test with a designated examiner.

What does an Oklahoma Class D license cover?

Cars, vans, recreational vehicles, fire trucks and trucks under 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating. Heavier vehicles, hazardous materials in placard amounts and vehicles for 16 or more people need a commercial Class A, B or C license. A motorcycle needs an M endorsement on top.

Moving to Oklahoma, renewing and keeping your license

New residents with a license from another state must get an Oklahoma license once they establish residency. You take a vision test, and the examiner can waive the written and drive tests if you hold a valid license that meets the department's standards.

A license is issued for 4 or 8 years and runs to the end of the month. You can renew up to a year early, and online. When you move, tell Service Oklahoma within 10 days. If your license expired more than 3 years ago, you take the written and drive tests again.
