You need 15 right answers out of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you have 60 minutes. The Oklahoma permit test is Service Oklahoma's Class D written test, and its questions come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual: traffic laws, road signs and safe driving. You can take it online at home or in person, in English only. At 15 you also need to be enrolled in driver education. From 16, passing the test is enough for a learner permit.

How it works
How the Oklahoma permit test works: 20 multiple-choice questions, 15 to pass
The Class D written test has 20 multiple-choice questions on Oklahoma traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, and the questions come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual.
You have 60 minutes and need 15 right to pass. Your result shows as soon as you finish.
You can take it online at home through Service Oklahoma's Know2Drive system, or in person at a Service Oklahoma location or a licensed operator.
It's offered only in English. The manual says an oral test is given on request, and you may need an appointment for it.
Taking the test is free. Each failed try adds $4, which you pay with the $42.50 permit fee once you pass.
Online you get two tries. After that you retest in person, and the manual says you wait at least one day after a fail.
After an online pass you still visit a Service Oklahoma location or licensed operator for the vision test, a meeting with an examiner and the permit itself.
Topics
What’s on the test
01
Permits, the GDL stages and your license
Who can get a learner permit and when, what each stage of Oklahoma's Graduated Driver License allows, and how you keep your license once you have it.
Key points (4)
At 15 you must be enrolled in an approved driver education course to get a learner permit. From 16, passing the written test is enough.
A learner permit lets you drive only from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you.
Under 18, you hold the permit at least 180 days and log 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night, before the drive test.
When you move, you must tell Service Oklahoma within 10 days.
02
Insurance, seat belts and child seats
What every Oklahoma driver must carry and wear: liability insurance, proof of it in the car, seat belts and the right restraint for a child.
Key points (4)
The minimum liability cover is $25,000 for one person's injury or death, $50,000 for two or more people and $25,000 for property damage, per accident.
Keep your security verification form (proof of insurance) in the car and show it to an officer when asked.
Every driver and front-seat passenger must wear a seat belt.
A child under 8 must ride in a child restraint, and it stays rear facing until age 2 or the seat's height or weight limit.
03
Signs, signals and pavement markings
Chapter 4 of the manual: what each sign color and shape means, how traffic lights and arrows work, and how to read yellow and white lines.
Key points (4)
Red means stop or not allowed, yellow is a general warning, orange marks construction and maintenance, and green gives directions.
A flashing red light means the same as a stop sign. On a flashing yellow arrow you may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
After a full stop you may turn right on red unless a sign forbids it.
At a railroad advance warning sign, slow down and be ready to stop 15 to 50 feet from the first track.
04
Right-of-way, school buses and the Move Over law
Who goes first at intersections, and what Oklahoma law asks when you meet pedestrians, emergency vehicles, school buses and stopped vehicles with flashing lights.
Key points (4)
At a four-way stop the first vehicle to enter goes first. If two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.
Stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights or a stop sign. Failing to stop means a one-year license revocation.
For a police car, fire engine or ambulance using a siren or flashing lights, pull to the right edge of the road and stop until it passes.
For a stopped vehicle with flashing lights on the roadside, move over a lane if it's safe, or slow down and drive carefully.
05
Lanes, passing, turns and expressways
How to change lanes, when you may and may not pass, how to signal and turn, and the rules for controlled-access highways.
Key points (4)
Signal at least 100 feet, or a third of a block, before you turn, slow down or stop.
Before passing on the left, check for at least 200 feet of clear road with no no-passing zone.
Don't pass within 100 feet of a blocked view, or when the solid yellow line is on your side.
On an expressway, keep between the minimum speed (usually 40 mph) and the maximum, and never cross the median to turn around.
06
Speed limits, stopping and following distance
The Basic Speed Rule, Oklahoma's limits when no sign is posted, night driving, and how much room to leave in front of you.
Key points (4)
Unless posted, the limit is 75 mph on controlled-access highways, 80 on turnpikes, 65 on undivided state highways and 55 on county roads.
The recommended speed for turning is 10 mph or less.
Use the three-second rule, or one car length for every 10 mph, and count four seconds in bad weather.
Dim your high beams within 1,000 feet of an oncoming vehicle and within 600 feet of a vehicle you're following.
07
Parking
How to leave your car safely, park at an angle, parallel and on a hill, and the places where Oklahoma law says you can't park.
Key points (4)
Parallel park within 18 inches of the curb, and within six inches when you park on a hill.
Facing downhill, turn your wheels toward the curb. Uphill with a curb, turn them away. Uphill with no curb, turn them to the right.
No parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection or 50 feet of a railroad crossing.
No parking within 30 feet of a stop sign, flashing beacon or traffic signal at the side of the road.
08
Sharing the road and driving tips
Pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, trucks, trains and farm equipment, plus the manual's advice on phones, animals, floods and what to do after a crash.
Key points (4)
Leave at least 3 feet when you pass a bicycle.
Texting while driving is illegal in Oklahoma, and permit and intermediate holders can lose their license for using a hand-held device.
Don't swerve to miss an animal that runs in front of you. The manual says swerving can cause a worse crash.
Never drive into water crossing the road. Most vehicles will float in 2 feet of water.
09
Alcohol, drugs, points and penalties
How alcohol and drugs affect driving, Oklahoma's implied consent and zero tolerance laws, DUI penalties and the point system.
Key points (4)
A BAC of 0.08 or more is DUI, and over 0.05 is evidence that your driving was impaired.
Under 21, any measurable amount of alcohol leads to a revocation, six months for a first offense.
Refusing a breath or blood test means automatic revocation, even if you haven't been drinking.
Ten or more points within five years means a suspension. Speeding is 2 points, and failing to stop for a school bus is 4.
Road signs
Signs from chapter 4 of the Oklahoma Driver Manual
Chapter 4 of the Oklahoma Driver Manual teaches signs by color and shape, so you know what a sign means before you can read its words. It also covers flashing yellow arrows, railroad crossings and the orange signs of work zones, where speeding fines double when workers or equipment are present.
Stop: a full stop before the crosswalk, even an unmarked one
Yield: slow down and be ready to stop
Do not enter: traffic is coming toward you
Do not pass: you can't see far enough ahead
No U-turn
Traffic signal ahead: be ready to stop
Right lane ends: get ready to merge
Deer crossing: watch both sides of the road
School zone or crossing: watch for children
Railroad ahead: be ready to stop 15 to 50 feet from the track
Flagger ahead: obey the flagperson's signals
Road work in 1,000 feet: fines double when workers are present

How many questions are on the Oklahoma permit test, and what's the passing score?
There are 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need 15 right, which is 75%. You have 60 minutes, and your result shows as soon as you finish, as of October 2026. The questions cover traffic laws, road signs and safe driving from the Oklahoma Driver Manual.
Can I take the Oklahoma permit test online?
Yes. Service Oklahoma's online test runs on a desktop or laptop with a webcam and microphone, at no extra fee. You get two tries online, then you retest in person. Passing online doesn't hand you the permit: you still visit a Service Oklahoma location or licensed operator for the vision test and the card. The online test page has the steps.
How old do you have to be to get a learner's permit in Oklahoma?
15, if you're enrolled in and taking an approved driver education course. From 16 you only need to pass the written test. Service Oklahoma's written test page lets you sit the test itself from 14, or 13 and a half if you live or work on a farm.
How much does the permit test cost in Oklahoma?
Taking it is free. You pay $42.50 for the learner permit once you pass, plus $4 for each failed try, as of October 2026. If you take the written test at a CareerTech testing center instead, that costs $25, and you still go to Service Oklahoma for the vision test and the permit.
What happens if you fail the Oklahoma written test?
You can take it again as many times as you need, but the manual says you wait at least one day after a fail. Online you only get two tries, so after a second online fail you retest at a Service Oklahoma location. Each fail adds $4 to the fee you pay when you pass.
Is the Oklahoma permit test offered in Spanish?
No. Service Oklahoma says the written test is only available in English, as of October 2026. The Oklahoma Driver Manual says an oral test is given on request, and you may need an appointment for it.
Does driver's ed let you skip the Oklahoma written test?
A completion certificate from an approved public school or commercial driver education course can waive the written test. Parent-taught driver education doesn't, so parent-taught students still take it. You still take the vision test either way.
Is the written test the same as the Oklahoma driving test?
No. The written test is the knowledge test for your learner permit. The driving test comes later: teens take it after holding the permit 180 days, and adults can take it as early as the next business day after passing the written test.
