The Oklahoma driving test

You can take it free with a Service Oklahoma examiner, or pay for one with a designated examiner at an approved driving school. Teens need to be at least 16 and to have held a learner permit for 180 days. Adults don't need a permit, only a written test passed in the last 12 months. On the Oklahoma driving test, the examiner checks how you control the car, turn, back up, park on a hill and parallel park, signal, keep your lane and yield.

Who can take it

  • At 16: you've finished driver education and held a learner permit at least 180 days with no convictions.
  • From 16 and a half to 18: you've held a learner permit at least 180 days with no convictions. Driver education isn't required.
  • Under 18, also bring: proof of 50 hours of driving (10 at night) and your Work Zone Safe certificate.
  • 18 and older: you passed the written test in the last 12 months, or your driver education waived it. If you hold a permit, it must have been active 30 days.
  • Anyone with an active suspension or revocation in Oklahoma or another state can't test.

Oklahoma driving test locations

Service Oklahoma has two Drive Test Centers: 7705 S Walker in Oklahoma City, and 732 W New Orleans Street, Suite 144, in Broken Arrow. You join each one's waitlist online. Service Oklahoma Licensing Offices give drive tests too, and the location finder shows which ones when you choose the drive test service.

Designated examiners are certified driver education instructors at school districts, commercial driving schools and licensed operators. Service Oklahoma's list of 110 approved driving schools marks 83 of them as offering license testing. They charge a fee, while Service Oklahoma's test costs nothing.

What does the examiner check on the Oklahoma driving test?

The examiner tells you where to drive and what to do. At a Drive Test Center the route is about 5 miles and takes about 20 minutes. You must show you can:

  • Control the car, including the brake, accelerator and clutch if it has one.
  • Turn left and right, back up, park on a hill, start on a hill and parallel park.
  • Signal and drive in the proper lane, including lane changes.
  • Obey traffic signs, markings and signals.
  • Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and vehicles, and respond to what other road users do.

The manual says you can fail for too many errors, dangerous driving, breaking a traffic law, a collision or refusing a maneuver. The examiner won't test you if the roads are slick or hazardous.

The car you bring

  • A valid license plate and registration (tag), and proof of insurance that doesn't list you as an excluded driver.
  • Working brakes, turn signals, brake lights, seat belts and a horn you can hear.
  • A windshield without major cracks or too much tint, and tires with more than 2/32 inch of tread.
  • Door handles that work inside and out, a left outside mirror plus an inside or right outside mirror, and an unmodified muffler.
  • Nobody else in the car with you and the examiner, and no pets.

If you fail, and after you pass

You can retake the drive test up to three times, at least a day apart or as the examiner says. After a third fail you wait 30 days, and after that you can test once every 30 days. An adult who fails three times without a permit must get one and hold it 30 days first. If a designated examiner failed you, bring the DL18DE form they give you to your retest.

When you pass, you get a paper credential and the card comes by mail. A teen moving up to the intermediate license pays $25, and an adult's first license is $42.50, plus $4 for each failed test, as of October 2026.
