Oklahoma learner's permit requirements

At 15 you need to be enrolled in, and taking, an approved driver education course. From 16 you only need to pass the written test. Whatever your age, the Oklahoma learner's permit requirements also include a vision test, your documents, a parent's consent if you're under 18 and a $42.50 fee, as of October 2026.

What are the Oklahoma learner's permit requirements at each age?

Service Oklahoma's written test page lets you take the written test from 14, or from 13 and a half if you live or work on a farm. The learner permit itself starts at 15. Farm families have a separate Farm Driving Permit from 14.

Documents to bring

  • One proof of identity and one proof of lawful presence, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate or a U.S. passport. Photocopies and notarized copies aren't accepted.
  • One proof of Oklahoma residency, or two for a REAL ID permit. Bills and bank statements must be dated in the last 60 days, and things like a tax return or W-2 in the last year.
  • Your Social Security number. You don't need the card.
  • A parent or legal guardian if you're under 18, or a notarized Parent Authorization Form if they can't come.
  • Proof of driver education, if you have it, and any name change or immigration documents.

Getting the permit, step by step

  1. Read the Oklahoma Driver Manual.
  2. At 15, enroll in driver education. At any age, a public school or commercial completion certificate can waive the written test.
  3. Take the written test online at home, or in person when you visit.
  4. Visit a Service Oklahoma location or licensed operator for the vision test and a meeting with an examiner. If you passed online, this is your only visit.
  5. Pay $42.50, plus $4 for each failed try. You leave with a paper permit, and the card comes by mail.

Rules while you hold the permit

  • Drive only from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you.
  • Have the permit with you during parent-taught driving lessons, which Service Oklahoma requires.
  • Don't use a hand-held phone or device. The manual says permit holders can be suspended or have their license canceled for it, except in a life-threatening emergency.
  • Under 18, hold the permit at least 180 days and log 50 hours of driving, 10 at night, before the drive test.
