GAMSAT scores for medicine: what each school asks for

There’s no single pass mark. The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) says universities set their own cut-off scores each year, and may set minimums for each section as well as the overall score. In Australia, the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS) publishes the minimum GAMSAT scores for medicine at its schools: at least 50 in each section at all of them, plus an overall or average minimum of 50, 52 or 55 at some.

  • 50Section minimum, every GEMSAS school
  • 55Overall minimum, University of Western Australia
  • Up to 6Schools per GEMSAS application

These are the minimums to be considered, not the scores that win a place. GEMSAS tells applicants to compare their scores with each school’s acceptable range in its Medical Schools Admission Guide. The University of Sydney and Flinders University take applications directly, so check their own sites.

How schools weigh the GAMSAT against your GPA

To choose who gets an interview, GEMSAS schools combine your GAMSAT with your grade point average (GPA) in different ways:

  • ANU and Deakin (general stream): standardised GAMSAT and standardised GPA combined.
  • Griffith, Macquarie and Queensland: 50% GAMSAT and 50% GPA.
  • Melbourne: GAMSAT and GPA in a qualifying degree combined, using an unweighted GAMSAT score.
  • Notre Dame: GAMSAT, GPA, Casper and bonus points weighted 30:30:30:10.
  • UWA: 40% GAMSAT and 60% GPA.
  • Wollongong: Casper and admissions bonuses, with the GAMSAT and GPA as hurdles.

Courses in Australia that use the GAMSAT

ACER lists four-year graduate-entry medicine at ANU, Deakin, Flinders, Griffith, Macquarie, Melbourne, Notre Dame (Fremantle and Sydney), Queensland, Sydney, UWA and Wollongong. It also lists graduate-entry dentistry at Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney and UWA, the Doctor of Optometry at Melbourne and the Master of Pharmacy at Sydney. The other Australian medical schools run five or six-year undergraduate degrees.

GEMSAS says a current GAMSAT score is required for most applicants to its courses, and that some entry schemes and pathways don’t need one. Each school’s entry in its admission guide says which.

Applying through GEMSAS

GEMSAS is the single application for graduate-entry medicine at its partner schools, run by GEMPASS Australia and the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). It’s open to Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and Australian humanitarian visa holders. Everyone else applies to universities directly.

For the 2027 intake, applications opened on 1 May 2026 and closed at 5pm Australian Eastern Standard Time on 29 May 2026, with a $275 fee. You choose up to six schools, nominate one GAMSAT ID that can’t be changed later, and get at most one interview. Registering for the GAMSAT is a separate step, done with ACER.

Using your GAMSAT score in Ireland

The Central Applications Office (CAO) handles graduate-entry medicine at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, University College Cork, University College Dublin and the University of Limerick, and veterinary medicine at University College Dublin. To have your results sent, you tick Ireland in your ACER account and add your CAO application number. For the 2026 round the deadline for both was 28 April 2026. Your results with the best overall score go to the CAO.

Using your GAMSAT score in the UK

ACER lists these UK medical schools, applied to through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS): Brunel, Chester, Exeter, East Anglia, Pears Cumbria, Keele, Liverpool, Plymouth, St Andrews and Dundee, City St George’s, Sunderland, Surrey, Swansea, Ulster and Worcester. Applicants need at least an upper second class honours degree, or a predicted one; Liverpool will also consider a 2:2 with a master’s or PhD. These courses are for home students, apart from listed exceptions at Liverpool, Swansea, Ulster and Worcester.

Plymouth and Exeter use the GAMSAT as the only measure of aptitude: reach their threshold and you’re invited to interview. Surrey invites applicants who pass its shortlisting and reach its threshold. For 2027 entry, you had to tick UK, add your UCAS Personal ID and choose your courses in your ACER account by midnight UK time (GMT) on 31 October 2026.
