GAMSAT sections, questions and timing

There are three parts and 5.25 hours of test time, split over two sittings. You write the Written Communication essays online at home first. About three weeks later you sit the two multiple-choice GAMSAT sections, Humanities and Sciences, together at a test centre.

Each multiple-choice question has four options. Wrong answers lose nothing, and every question is worth the same, so ACER’s advice is to answer them all.

How long is the GAMSAT?

ACER puts the total test time at 5.25 hours: 65 minutes for the essays and 4 hours 10 minutes at the test centre. On the test centre day there’s a 30-minute break between Humanities and Sciences, and ACER says to expect about six hours there in all. Start times are on the test centres page.

Is there a GAMSAT syllabus?

Only for the sciences. ACER sets a subject mix and a knowledge level for Biological and Physical Sciences, and both are on the Section 3 page. For Humanities and Written Communication it describes the skills tested rather than topics to learn, and says each question gives you what you need to answer it.

GAMSAT Section 1, 2 and 3

ACER names the sections and doesn’t number them. Prep providers such as GradReady and Fraser’s Medical still use numbers, which match up like this:

  • Section 1: Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Section 2: Written Communication
  • Section 3: Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences

Gold Standard describes the numbers as the sections’ former names.
