Do you need GAMSAT preparation courses?
ACER’s answer is that the test measures skills and knowledge built up over a long time, so there’s little to gain from last-minute cramming. It asks you to check whether a course can give objective, reliable evidence that it improves GAMSAT scores enough to justify what it costs.
The exception ACER makes is science. If your degree isn’t in science, it highly recommends some specific preparation in the basic sciences to first-year university level, and suggests a bridging course at a vocational or further education provider if you’re unsure of chemistry, physics or biology.
How to prepare for the GAMSAT, from ACER’s advice
- Read widely and often, on many topics and from many sources, and practise forming opinions and arguments.
- If chemistry, biology or physics is weak, fill the gap first: Year 12 level physics, first-year university biology and chemistry.
- Work through an ACER practice test under exam conditions, then go back over what you got wrong.
- Write practice essays in one hour for two tasks, put them aside for a few days, then reread them or ask someone else to.
- Try the online platform demo in your ACER account so the test screen holds no surprises.
GAMSAT courses and tutoring in Melbourne, Sydney and other cities
ACER doesn’t list tutors or courses. Among the providers here, GradReady says it runs in-person courses in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, Gold Standard lists courses for Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth at local universities, each marked Live Online, and Fraser’s Medical sells an in-person version of its Comprehensive course. All three also sell online courses, so you can study from anywhere.
What to compare before you pay
- How many of your essays are marked, and by whom. ACER’s own essay generator gives a score range but no comments.
- How many full-length practice exams you get, and whether they run to the real timing: 100 minutes for Humanities and 150 for Sciences.
- Whether the science teaching starts from the basics, if you don’t have a science degree.
- What the course says it can do for your score, and what evidence it gives for that.
