How the GAMSAT score works

You get four scores, each on a scale of 0 to 100: one for each section and an overall GAMSAT score. They aren’t percentages. The overall score is a weighted average in which Biological and Physical Sciences counts twice, and there’s no pass mark, because each university sets its own minimums.

How is the overall GAMSAT score calculated?

ACER, the Australian Council for Educational Research, uses this formula:

  • Overall score = (1 x Humanities and Social Sciences + 1 x Written Communication + 2 x Biological and Physical Sciences) / 4

As an example of our own: section scores of 60, 62 and 65 give (60 + 62 + 130) / 4 = 63. Your real overall score may differ slightly, because ACER works it out to several decimal places before the section scores are rounded.

Is there an official GAMSAT score calculator?

No. ACER says the rounding makes it impossible for test takers to replicate its process, and it doesn’t share any more detail on scoring. Raw marks from a practice test can’t be turned into an exact scaled score. What ACER’s practice tools give you is a review of right and wrong answers from the online tests, and a score range with a percentile band from the essay generator.

What is a scaled score?

Your raw score, the number of questions you got right, is converted onto a measurement scale. GAMSAT uses several test forms, and scaling allows for small differences in their difficulty, so a score means the same whichever form or sitting you took. A gap of 5 points stands for the same change in ability anywhere on the scale. The test may include a few trial questions that don’t count towards your score.

Percentiles and averages

Your Statement of Results comes with a chart of your approximate percentile ranking for the overall score, against everyone in the same sitting. Universities look at your section and overall scores, not the percentile. ACER’s results pages don’t give an average or a highest score.

Can you appeal a GAMSAT score?

No. ACER doesn’t remark any section, including the essays, and says scoring errors are highly unlikely. Concerns about a question or the conditions on the day should go to the supervisor at the time, then in writing to the GAMSAT Office.
