What’s on the HR licence theory test in WA?
DTMI says the test checks your understanding of the road rules and heavy vehicle driving in WA, and that the fact sheet has everything you need. Its questions cover areas such as:
- Axle mass limits
- Maximum heights, widths and lengths
- Speed limits for heavy vehicles
- Warning signs heavy vehicles must carry outside built-up areas
- Permits for extra mass or oversize loads
- Trailer brakes and towing
You can’t use your phone or notes during the test. The E89 fact sheet DTMI links to was last updated in November 2019, so check the HR licence page for anything newer before you go. DTMI doesn’t list a separate practice test for it: the fact sheet and Drive Safe are the study material it points to.
Who can get an HR licence
You can’t be on a provisional licence, and you must have held a C class licence for at least 2 years, or a light rigid or medium rigid licence for at least 1 year. You don’t need a learner’s permit. You learn with a licensed instructor, a youth driver education instructor, or someone who has held an HR licence for at least 4 years, with L plates on, at or under 100 km/h and at 0.00% alcohol.
Applying and the assessment
At a DTMI service centre or regional agent you submit Form DLA1, show proof of identity, pay the fee, sit the theory test and the eyesight test, and make a commercial medical declaration. The additional class application fee is $150.80 and includes one practical driving assessment. If a registered training organisation (RTO) does your assessment, the HR class application is $63.50.
Your assessment vehicle must have 3 or more axles and a GVM over 15 tonnes, loaded to at least 16 tonnes on the road.
