Learner’s permit WA cost, from the theory test to your P plates

Your first trip to a centre costs $173.20 if you pass the theory test: $22.40 for the test and $150.80 for the permit application. Those are the fees the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) listed in October 2026. The learner’s permit WA cost covers more than it seems, because the $150.80 includes your first practical driving assessment. Add $10.70 only if you want the printed log book, since the Learn&Log app is free.

  • $22.40Theory test, first attempt
  • $150.80Permit, with one driving assessment

Fees you can avoid

  • The theory test fee, if you finished Keys4Life at school in the last 2 years and bring the certificate
  • The log book fee, if you use Learn&Log in the ServiceWA app
  • A second PDA fee, if you cancel or move your booking at least 48 hours ahead
  • Reapplying when your permit expires: DTMI charges no fee to reapply, only for any tests you need to sit again

The hazard perception test and your P licence

The hazard perception test has its own fee, paid at the centre before you sit it. It’s on our hazard perception test fees page, with the other states’ fees.

When you pass your PDA, DTMI says you pay the renewal fee for your licence and have your photo taken. Its standard driver’s licence fees are $49.40 for 1 year and $172 for 5 years. DTMI doesn’t say on its P plate pages which length a new provisional licence is issued for, so ask at the centre.

If you finish your P plates without a traffic offence, DTMI gives you a free 1-year licence renewal.
