How does PDA booking work in WA?
- Register for a DoTDirect account on DTMI’s website, if you don’t have one.
- Log in, choose your vehicle class and search for a time at a location and date. You can book up to 6 months ahead, but not for the same day.
- Pay by debit or credit card and save your receipt. DTMI says it can’t give you a copy later.
- Keep the confirmation. You can have it sent by email or SMS, or print it.
If a location doesn’t show up, DTMI says it may not run PDAs for your vehicle class or may not be bookable online. In that case contact the regional centre directly.
Changing or cancelling your booking
Give at least 48 hours’ notice, weekends and public holidays included, or you lose the booking and pay $120.50 for a new one. You can change or cancel as often as you like, any time through DoTDirect, or by calling DTMI on weekdays.
DTMI’s cancellation policy, made under the Road Traffic (Authorisation to Drive) Regulations 2014, lets you move a booking without paying again in extenuating circumstances such as serious illness, a family emergency or your car breaking down. Each case is assessed on its own.
The Drive Safe handbook still says you must give more than two full working days’ notice. DTMI’s booking pages and its April 2026 policy both say 48 hours, so go by those.
Who can book for you, and who can’t book online
Your driving instructor can book or cancel a PDA for you, but only with your consent, and the booking stays in your name. DTMI says you shouldn’t pay a driving instructor or business any extra fee to get a booking.
You can’t book online if your PDA is because of an unfinished medical assessment, an expired overseas licence, an extraordinary or conditional licence application, or a sanction on your licence or permit. Some senior renewals are excluded too. In those cases you book by phone.
After a failed PDA
You book and pay for another PDA, and DTMI makes you wait at least 7 days before you can book the next one online.
Do you need to book the theory test?
No, not at a metro service centre, unless you need a translator. Regional centres and agents may ask you to call ahead. The test has to start before the centre’s cut-off time, which DTMI lists for each centre. In Perth it ranges from 3:45 pm to 4:45 pm.
You don’t book the hazard perception test at a metro centre either. Our hazard perception test pages cover the WA rules for that one.
