Driving lessons in WA, and where to study for the theory test

Learn the rules before you touch the wheel. The theory test comes first, and everything on it is in Drive Safe, the handbook from the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI). Driving lessons in WA start once you have your learner’s permit, with a licensed instructor, a family member or a friend who meets DTMI’s supervisor rules. DTMI suggests starting with a professional instructor if you can.

Which study option suits you for the theory test?

If you like reading, use Drive Safe. DTMI says you can learn everything you need to know from it, and it covers road rules, signs and safe driving in one PDF.

If you’d rather test yourself, DTMI has 11 road rules quizzes for cars, built from Drive Safe, and you can retake each one as often as you like.

Private apps are handy for drilling questions on your phone. None of them are DTMI’s, so check anything that surprises you against the handbook.

If you did Keys4Life at school in the last 2 years, you may not need to sit the theory test at all. Bring your certificate when you apply.

A study path, from first read to your L plates

One way to work through it:

  1. Read Drive Safe, including Part 3 on the major road rules and the traffic signs pages.
  2. Do DTMI’s road rules quizzes, and reread the sections behind anything you got wrong.
  3. Gather your identity documents. DTMI wants originals, printed, not digital.
  4. Go to a DTMI service centre or regional agent, apply for your permit and sit the test on the same day.
  5. Once you pass, book your first driving lessons or start driving with your supervisor.

How do you choose driving lessons in WA?

DTMI’s advice is to check three things before you book a driving instructor:

  • They hold a current driving instructor’s licence issued by DTMI
  • Their car is licensed and has dual controls
  • They have a current WA Working with Children Check, if you’re under 18

DTMI says a professional instructor can help you learn basic car control and good habits early, and a supervisor at home can then build on that. Your instructor can also book your practical driving assessment for you, with your consent, and DTMI says you shouldn’t pay anyone extra fees to get a booking.

Instructors set their own prices. DTMI doesn’t publish a list of schools or lesson fees.

Practising for the driving test, not just the theory

DTMI’s booklet Driving Techniques for Safer Drivers sets out exercises for learner drivers. DTMI says some of them may be part of the practical driving assessment, and that you’re ready when you can do them confidently.

The theory quizzes and apps don’t prepare you for that part. Only hours on the road do, and DTMI calls its 50 logged hours a minimum.
