Is there an online driving test in WA?

Not yet. You sit the theory test, the hazard perception test and the practical driving assessment (PDA) in person with the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI). On 26 April 2026 the State Government said it will develop an online driving test in WA for the theory and hazard perception parts, in addition to the in-centre tests, but it hasn’t set a start date. Plenty of the steps around the tests are already online.

Why the theory test isn’t online in WA

DTMI’s rules for the Computerised Theory Test say you sit it at a service centre or regional agent, with no phone, device or handbook. Applying for the permit also means an eyesight test and showing original identity documents in person, so the whole first visit happens at a centre.

When will WA get an online driving test?

The April 2026 announcement lists an online theory and hazard perception test as one part of a wider overhaul of WA’s graduated licensing system. The same package raises the learner period to 12 months and supervised hours to 80, among other changes. It says start dates will be set after a separate motorcycle licensing review. Until DTMI announces a date, nothing about how you sit the tests has changed.

Learn&Log, the online log book

Learn&Log is the free digital version of the Learner Log Book, in the ServiceWA app. You log in with a myID digital identity at Standard strength. You can record hours in it, on paper, or in both, but if any hours are on paper you still bring the paper book to your practical driving assessment (PDA).

If every hour is in Learn&Log, you submit a declaration of completion in the app at least 24 hours before your PDA.
