The motorcycle theory test in WA

It’s longer than the car test: 35 multiple-choice questions, and you need 28 right. You study Ride Safe, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure’s (DTMI) rider handbook, and sit the motorcycle theory test in WA on the day you apply for a learner’s permit. That’s from 16 for a restricted (R-E) motorcycle licence, or 15 and a half for a moped (R-N). The fees match the car test.

How does the motorcycle theory test in WA work?

It’s a computer test at a DTMI service centre or regional agent, with no phone, device or handbook. A pass stays valid for 5 years. If you fail, you resit and pay the resit fee.

ItemFee
Theory test, first attempt$22.40
Theory test resit$19.20
Learner’s permit application, includes one PDA$150.80

DTMI has 3 motorcycle and moped quizzes built from Ride Safe, next to its car quizzes.

Which licence are you going for?

A restricted (R-E) licence is for motorcycles approved under the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS). WA uses the New South Wales LAMS list. A moped (R-N) licence is the other learner option. If you already hold a C class licence or higher, you don’t keep a log book for an R-E permit.

After your permit, the steps match the car ones: learn to ride with a supervisor, sit the hazard perception test, and pass a practical driving assessment.

Proposed changes for riders

DTMI consulted on a separate motorcycle licensing system from 3 May to 24 May 2026, and the submissions are under review. The proposals include raising the minimum age for a learner motorcycle licence from 16 to 18, a 3-year provisional period, compulsory training and assessment, and limits on late-night riding and pillion passengers. They are proposals, not law, and today’s rules still apply.
