What are the learner’s permit identification requirements in WA?
DTMI sorts identity documents into four categories, and you bring one of two sets, which DTMI calls combinations:
| Category | Set 1 | Set 2 |
|---|---|---|
| A: identity in Australia | 1 | 1 |
| B: links you to that identity | 1 | 0 |
| C: identity in the community | 2 | 2 |
| D: your residential address | 1 | 2 |
The name has to match on every document. If it doesn’t, bring the certificate that links them, such as a marriage or change of name certificate.
Category A and B documents
Category A documents that DTMI lists include:
- Original Australian birth certificate, not an extract or commemorative certificate
- Australian citizenship or naturalisation documents
- Australian visa with your overseas passport
- ImmiCards issued by the Department of Home Affairs
Category B includes an Australian passport not expired by more than 2 years, a current overseas passport, an interstate driver’s licence or learner’s permit with your photo, or a completed Secondary Identification Statutory Declaration (Form E41).
Options for learners under 18
DTMI has a few documents aimed at young applicants:
- Form E41 as your Category B document, if your parent or legal guardian comes with you and shows their own primary and secondary ID
- A WA secondary school report less than 6 months old, as a Category C document
- A Keys4Life certificate less than 2 years old, as a Category C document
- A current WA Recreational Skipper’s Ticket or an Australian Taxation Office notice, as Category C
- A letter from your school with your current address, for Category D
DTMI’s full Category C list allows a school report up to 12 months old, but the learner section of its identification requirements says 6 months. Bring one under 6 months old to be safe.
What else to bring on the day
Meeting the learner’s permit identification requirements in WA is only part of the visit. Also bring:
- A completed Driver’s Licence Application (Form DLA1)
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them, for the eyesight test
- Money for the theory test and the permit fee
The DLA1 form asks you to declare any medical conditions or medication. DTMI will tell you if you need a medical assessment before it grants your permit.
For your photo, you take off glasses and any face or head covering, unless it’s worn for medical, religious or cultural reasons and your face is clearly visible.
