Red Seal electrician exam

There are two Red Seal electrician trades, Construction Electrician and Industrial Electrician, and each has its own 100-question exam. Construction puts 30 questions on wiring systems; Industrial adds 17 on process control systems and asks far more critical thinking questions. To become a Red Seal electrician you pass the exam for your trade, after an apprenticeship or by challenging it with experience.

What's on the Red Seal electrician exam?

The two exams split their 100 questions like this:

Major work activityQuestions (Construction / Industrial)
Common occupational skills11 / 9
Generating, distribution and service systems28 / 23
Wiring systems30 / 20
Motors and control systems21 / 21
Signalling and communication systems10 / 10
Process control systemsIndustrial only: 17

Industrial's name for this area is "Installs and maintains rotating and non-rotating equipment and control systems".

The question types differ too. Construction Electrician is mostly procedural and application (60 to 70%), with 20 to 30% critical thinking. Industrial Electrician leans harder on critical thinking, at 40 to 50% of questions.

Formulas you're given

Both exams come with a formula sheet, posted on the exam information page so you can learn it in advance. It covers things like Ohm's law, power and power factor, three-phase power, short-circuit current and turns ratio. Practise with each formula until you know which one a question needs.

Which standard is the Construction Electrician exam based on?

The previous one. A new Red Seal Occupational Standard for Construction Electrician is out, but red-seal.ca says current exams still use the previous standard while new exams are developed. Study from the previous standard, and check the trade page again close to your exam date.
