Red Seal exams in Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency runs certification exams, and in Red Seal trades the certification exam is the Red Seal exam. Pass it with 70% or more and your certificate carries the Red Seal. For a Red Seal in Nova Scotia, apprentices apply once they've finished their program, and experienced workers apply as trade qualifiers.

How do you book a Red Seal exam in Nova Scotia?

  1. Check the exam schedule in the agency's online system (AMS). The deadline to apply is usually about a month before a sitting.
  2. Send an exam application with your preferred date and location, and pay the fee shown on the schedule.
  3. Wait for your confirmation letter by mail. The date can differ from the one you asked for.
  4. On the day, bring the letter and a photo ID, such as a driver's licence, passport or apprenticeship ID card.

Results and rewrites

Results come by mail, with a breakdown by section; the timing is on our results and rewrites page. To rewrite, send a new application and fee before the deadline. There's no fixed wait, but after two or more unsuccessful attempts you need to make a study plan with your Industry Training Consultant.

Challenging as a trade qualifier

If you've worked in the trade but aren't an apprentice, you book an interview with an Industry Training Consultant and bring documented evidence of your experience and two qualified references. The agency's page doesn't give a set number of hours. Questions go to the Halifax office at 1-800-494-5651.
