CDL permit test in Alabama

You pass the written tests from ALEA's Commercial Driver License Manual, pay $25 for testing and $36.25 for a commercial learner permit (CLP), as of October 2026. Then you hold the CLP at least 14 days before the skills test. The CDL permit test in Alabama needs a current driver license first, and first-time CDL applicants must finish federal entry-level driver training.

How does the CDL permit test in Alabama work?

The questions come from the Commercial Driver License Manual on ALEA's manuals page, with a supplement for its modernized version. ALEA doesn't publish the number of questions. Your CLP is valid for 360 days and can't be renewed. If it runs out, you retake all the written tests for a new one.

Training, medical card and self-certification

Entry-level driver training is required for a first CDL, from a provider on the FMCSA training provider registry. You also self-certify the type of driving you'll do, online or by mail. If you drive non-excepted interstate, you need a DOT medical card from an FMCSA-certified examiner. CDL district offices include Cullman, Decatur, Dothan, Evergreen, Hamilton, Huntsville, Jacksonville, Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika, Sheffield, Sumiton and Tuscaloosa. CDL headquarters is 334-676-7394.
