What ALEA does say about the test
These are the facts ALEA publishes:
- It covers Alabama traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving, taken from the Alabama Driver Manual
- It's given on automated testing machines at a driver license office
- It's offered in English, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese
- If you can't read the test, an oral version is available on the same machines
- Each try costs $5, with no checks accepted
How many questions are you allowed to miss on the Alabama permit test?
ALEA doesn't publish a pass mark either. Practice apps and sites each pick their own format, so you'll see different numbers on different apps. One App Store app uses 36 questions per test, and another site's exam simulator uses 30. None of those comes from ALEA. Our practice test uses an 80% bar as a safe target: if you can get 16 of 20 right, you know the manual well.
If you don't pass
You pay $5 for the next try. ALEA doesn't publish a waiting period between tries or a cap on attempts, so ask the office when you can come back. Go over the chapters you were unsure about before you do.
Motorcycle and CDL tests
These are separate tests from other manuals. A motorcycle or motor-driven cycle test comes from the Alabama Motorcycle Manual, and if you apply for a motor-driven cycle license and a learner license together, you take both exams. CDL written tests come from the Commercial Driver License Manual and cost $25.
