Alabama ID card

$36.25, plus a $5 document exam fee the first time, as of October 2026. That's the price of a non-driver Alabama ID card, and you get one anywhere driver licenses are issued, with the same proof of identity a license needs. It shows your photo, name, date of birth and address, and you can renew or replace an existing one online through ALEA.

Who can get an Alabama ID card?

Alabama residents can apply. The manual says ID cards are for people who can't physically qualify for a license, don't hold a current Alabama license, or want to stop driving and hand in their license. You can't hold an ID card and a license that are both STAR IDs.

Documents for a first ID card

Bring one primary document that proves your name and date of birth, such as a certified birth certificate or U.S. passport, plus your Social Security card. If your primary document has no photo, bring a third ID. For a STAR ID card, you need the four documents on ALEA's STAR ID list instead.

Can you renew an Alabama ID card online?

If you're eligible, yes. ALEA's online services at AlabamaDL.alea.gov let you renew or replace an existing license, ID or permit, and reprint a temporary card. ALEA doesn't spell out who's eligible, so try online first. A first-time card has to be done in person.
