Renew your Alabama driver's license

You can do it up to 180 days before it expires: online at AlabamaDL.alea.gov if you're eligible, or in person at a probate judge's office, a license commissioner's office or an ALEA examining office. There's no test when you renew an Alabama driver's license, and the new one is valid for four years.

Can you renew your Alabama driver's license online?

Often, yes. ALEA's online services let you renew or replace an existing license, ID or permit, and the manual says online renewal is open to you 'if eligible'. ALEA's pages don't list the eligibility rules, so start online and the system will tell you. You need a visit to add or change a class, restriction or endorsement, and for your first STAR ID.

Renewing in person

Renewals and duplicates are handled at county offices: the probate judge or the license commissioner, depending on the county. ALEA's driver license examining offices renew licenses too. Bring your license and proof of your Social Security number if it isn't already on file.

Renewing by mail from out of state

If you're out of state for the military, a job, college or similar reasons, or can't get to an office, use form DL-100. You qualify if you got an Alabama license with your photo and signature in the last four years. Mail it to ALEA's Driver License Division, PO Box 1471, Montgomery, AL 36102-1471. The license must still show an Alabama address.

If your license has already expired

Alabama gives you a 60-day grace period after the expiration date. After that, you can still renew without a test for up to three years, but the new license runs four years from the old expiration date, and you may not drive on the expired one. After three years expired, you take the driver examination again.

What it costs

ALEA's fee list shows $36.25 for a license and doesn't list a separate renewal price. Counties can charge slightly more where local law allows, and checks aren't accepted at ALEA offices.
