Alabama permit test appointment

You book it online through ALEA's Driver License Online Services at AlabamaDL.alea.gov, where you can pre-apply for a first-time permit and request a slot at an ALEA office. When you go to your Alabama permit test appointment, you pay the $5 test fee at the office, in cash or by money order. For the road test later, ALEA says some offices take bookings up to two weeks ahead and every testing site welcomes walk-ins.

How do you book an Alabama permit test appointment?

  1. Go to AlabamaDL.alea.gov and open Plan Your Visit.
  2. Pre-apply for your first-time permit, so your details are ready when you arrive.
  3. Request an appointment at the ALEA office you want. Its list has 76 locations.
  4. Gather your documents: birth certificate, Social Security card, two proofs of address and the DL-193 school form if you're under 19.
  5. Bring $5 for the test and $36.25 for the learner license, in cash or a money order.

Booking the road test

ALEA's GDL page says road skills test appointments can be booked online up to two weeks in advance at select locations, and walk-ins are welcome at all testing sites. A 16-year-old must bring a parent or guardian. If neither can come, the parent can sign form DL-31 to let another adult sign for you.

Can you walk in for the knowledge test?

ALEA's pages don't say either way for the knowledge test. They only promise walk-ins for the road skills test. Call the office first, or book, so you don't make the trip for nothing. ALEA posts closures and short days on its driver license page, like the Pell City office moving to 1820 2nd Ave N on November 2, 2026.
