Alabama driver's license fee and other ALEA costs

A permit costs $5 for each try at the knowledge test plus $36.25 for the learner license, so $41.25 if you pass first time, as of October 2026. The standard Alabama driver's license fee is the same $36.25. ALEA doesn't take checks, and counties can charge slightly more where local law allows.

Is the road test free?

Yes. No ALEA source lists a fee for the road test itself. The open question is the Stage II license you get after it. The manual says that when a 16 or 17-year-old passes, the new license with the Y restriction removed is issued at no cost for the rest of its four years. ALEA's GDL page lists $36.25 for a Stage II license. Bring the $36.25 in case, and ask the examiner which applies.

CDL fees

CDL testing is $25, and the skills test is $20 for first-time applicants and upgrades. The commercial learner permit is $36.25, and the license is $66.25 for Class A, $56.25 for Class B and $36.25 for Class C.
