Alabama online permit test: what you can do at home

You can't take the real one from home. ALEA gives the knowledge test only at its driver license offices, on automated testing machines, and its pages list no online version as of October 2026. Any Alabama online permit test you find on the web is a practice test. What you can do online is pre-apply, request an appointment and, once licensed, renew or replace your card.

Is there an official Alabama online permit test?

No. The manual describes the knowledge test at a driver license office, and the list of online services ALEA prints at the back of its manual doesn't include a test. So there's no way to sit the real test from home.

What ALEA lets you do online

ALEA's online services at AlabamaDL.alea.gov cover:

  • Pre-applying for a first-time license, ID or permit, and requesting an office appointment
  • Renewing or replacing a license, ID or permit you already have, and reprinting a temporary one
  • Updating your address and emergency contact
  • CDL self-certification
  • Reinstatement, hearings and hardship license applications
  • Buying your 3-year driving record or a crash report

Practicing online for free

Our 20 practice questions are free and written from the current manual, with signs shown. The manual is free as a PDF too. If you want a bigger question bank, compare apps on our study guide page.

What still needs a visit

Your first permit, your first STAR ID, the road test, an out-of-state transfer, and any change to your license classes, restrictions or endorsements all need an ALEA office in person.
