STAR license in Alabama (STAR ID)

It's Alabama's REAL ID: a license or ID card with a gold star in the upper left corner. Since May 7, 2025, travelers 18 and older need a STAR license, a passport or another accepted ID to board a domestic flight. You can get your first STAR license in Alabama only at an ALEA driver license examining office, not at a county office.

What do you need for a STAR license in Alabama?

Bring four original documents, no photocopies:

  • One for identity and date of birth, such as a valid U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate or a permanent resident card
  • One for your Social Security number, such as your Social Security card or a W-2 from this year or last
  • Two for your Alabama address, such as a utility bill under 90 days old, a lease, a mortgage or a voter registration card
  • Certified proof of any name change, like a marriage certificate or court order, if your name differs from your identity document

If a bill is in your spouse's or parent's name, add your marriage or birth certificate.

Do you need a STAR ID?

Only if you want your license to work for domestic flights, or for some military bases that ask for it. A passport works for flights too. Alabama licenses and IDs issued since April 25, 2022 that aren't STAR IDs say 'Not for Federal Identification' across the top. They're still valid for driving.

Getting a STAR ID before your license expires

You can, but you pay the duplicate fee. You can hold only one STAR ID, either a license or an ID card, so if you have both, one is canceled at your next issue. After your first STAR ID, renewals and duplicates can be done at county license offices.
