The Oregon CDL permit test

To drive a commercial vehicle in Oregon you first get a commercial learner permit (CLP). That means passing the CDL general knowledge test, plus the combination vehicles and air brakes tests if your truck needs them. The Oregon CDL permit test is in English only, with no translators, and each knowledge test costs $10. You must already hold an Oregon driver's license.

Who can take the Oregon CDL permit test?

To get a CLP, you need to:

  • Hold an Oregon driver's license
  • Be 21 or older, or 18 to drive only within Oregon
  • Prove your legal name, U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence, identity, date of birth and address, and give your Social Security number
  • Pass a vision screening and a DOT medical exam with an examiner on the federal National Registry
  • Not be suspended or disqualified in any state, or listed as prohibited in the federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse

Since March 16, 2026, DMV no longer issues non-domiciled, limited-term CDLs or CLPs. Knowledge test results are good for six months, so finish your CLP application within that time.

Which knowledge tests you need

Hazmat and doubles and triples can't go on a CLP, only on the full CDL. DMV's CDL page doesn't give question counts or pass marks for these tests. Study the Oregon Commercial Driver Manual, which also has an audio version.

Training before the skills test

If you're getting a Class A or B CDL for the first time, upgrading from B to A, or adding passenger, school bus or hazmat for the first time, you must finish entry-level driver training first. The provider has to be on the federal Training Provider Registry, and the training must be done before you book the skills test or take the hazmat knowledge test.

The CDL skills test

Once you hold a CLP, you book the skills test with a DMV-approved third-party CDL tester. It's in English and has three parts: a pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic control skills and an on-road drive. The truck can't carry a load or hazmat placards. Results are good for six months.
