Where can you get the Oregon DMV handbook?
All four versions are on DMV's site. The PDF is form 37, and the Spanish manual is form 37s. DMV's manuals page doesn't say whether offices hand out printed copies, so print the PDF if you want one on paper.
What's in the book
After a section on the tests themselves, the manual has seven study sections and a last one on licensing:
- Section 1: Signs and traffic signals
- Section 2: Lane travel, speed limits, passing and freeways
- Section 3: Turns, intersections and roundabouts
- Section 4: Sharing the road with pedestrians, bikes, buses and emergency vehicles
- Section 5: Railroad crossings, light rail and streetcars
- Section 6: Parking and stopping
- Section 7: Safe and responsible driving, including alcohol and emergencies
- Other important information: how to apply, insurance, collisions and losing your license
Can you use the manual during the test?
No. At an office you can't use the manual, notes or any device, though you may ask to use a paper translation dictionary. Online, the manual, notes and other devices aren't allowed either, and the webcam takes photos while you test.
Other Oregon DMV manuals
Riders study the Oregon Motorcycle and Moped Manual (form 6367), and commercial drivers the Oregon Commercial Driver Manual (form 36m). Both have audio versions. Parents of new drivers can read How to Guide Your Teen Driver (form 7190), in English and Spanish.
Getting the most from it
Read it one section at a time and write down every number you meet: speed limits, distances in feet, ages and hours. Those are the easiest questions to lose marks on. Then test yourself on each section before moving to the next.
