The Oregon DMV online test: knowledge test at home

It's the real test. Oregon lets you take the Class C knowledge test at home, at any time, on a laptop or desktop with a webcam. The Oregon DMV online test is the same 35-question test you'd take in an office, for the same $7. If you're under 18, an adult has to register as your proctor. After you pass, you still go to a DMV office to finish your permit.

Who can take the Oregon DMV online test?

You need a Social Security number to register. If you haven't been given one, or the testing company can't verify who you are, you test at an office instead. The motorcycle knowledge test is online too, but only if you already hold an Oregon license or permit. CDL tests aren't online.

Your computer and the camera

You'll need:

  • A desktop or laptop computer. Phones, tablets and other touchscreens don't work
  • A mouse and a keyboard
  • A working webcam, which takes your photo at the start and more photos at random during the test

No manual, notes or other devices are allowed. The test can read each question and its answers aloud if you turn on the audio.

Proctors for testers under 18

Your proctor registers for the test and watches you take it. They must be 21 or older and have a Social Security number. They don't have to be your parent, and they can't have proctored more than five DMV tests in the past 12 months. Testers 18 and older don't need one.

Tries, and what happens after you pass

You get two tries in any 24 hours and four online tries for each kind of test. After that, you test at an office. Once you pass, go to a DMV office with your documents for the vision test, photo and permit. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian signs there. You don't need your Social Security card, just the number.
