Getting an Oregon driver's license

For a first Oregon driver's license you pass a vision test and the 35-question knowledge test, practice on an instruction permit, then pass a drive test, or have it waived. Under 18, you hold the permit for six months and log 100 hours, or 50 with driver education, and you get a provisional license at 16. At 18 or older the permit is optional. The license costs $64 for eight years, as of October 2026.

Steps for a first Oregon driver's license

The order is the same at any age, with a few extra steps for teens:

  1. Study the Oregon Driver Manual and pass the knowledge test, online or at an office.
  2. At a DMV office, pass the vision test, show your documents, give your Social Security number and get your photo taken. Under 18, a parent or guardian signs.
  3. Practice with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you. Teens hold the permit for six months and log 100 hours, or 50 after an approved driver education course.
  4. Book and pass the drive test with DMV or a testing business, unless it's waived.
  5. Pay the license fee and get your photo taken. The license comes by mail.

What is the driving age in Oregon?

You can get an instruction permit at 15 and a provisional license at 16 or 17. The provisional license's passenger and night limits end when you turn 18 or after a year, whichever comes first. A motorcycle permit or endorsement starts at 16, after you have a license.

New to Oregon with a license

If you hand in a license from another U.S. state, D.C., a U.S. territory, the U.S. Department of State, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, you may not need the knowledge or drive test. It can't be expired more than a year. You still pass the vision test, show your documents and pay the fee.

Documents, and REAL ID or not

For a standard license or permit you bring one original document that shows your name and date of birth, such as a U.S. birth certificate or passport, plus one document with your Oregon home address, such as a utility bill from the last six months. A REAL ID needs two proofs of address from different places and proof of lawful status, and it costs $30 more. You need a REAL ID or a passport to board a domestic flight.

Renewing an Oregon driver's license

You can renew up to 12 months before your license expires and up to 2 years after. Many people can renew online through DMV2U if their photo on file is less than nine years old. At 65 or older you renew in person, because you need a vision test. Renewal is $54, or $84 for a REAL ID, as of October 2026. After more than 2 years expired, you apply as a new driver.
