What is a good TOEFL score?

It's the score your school or program asks for, since the TOEFL has no pass mark. ETS's own guide to requirements, from October 2025, puts US requirements on the 1 to 6 scale from 3.5 at some community colleges to 5.5 at top-ranked universities. Your school may also set a minimum for each section, so check both numbers before you aim for a good TOEFL score.

What is a good TOEFL score in the US, UK and Canada?

ETS published these ranges on October 1, 2025. Each school sets its own rule, so check its admissions page.

WhereTypical requirement (1-6)
US top-ranked universities4.5 to 5.5
US mid-tier universities4 to 5
US community colleges and some state schools3.5 to 4
UK Russell Group universities5 to 5.5
Other UK universities4 to 4.5
Canada, top universities4.5 to 5, with no section below 4.5
Canada, colleges and diploma programs3.5 to 4

ETS's blog also gives old 0-120 figures, but a few don't match its official conversion; use the table on our score range page.

Is there a passing score for the TOEFL?

No. Nobody passes or fails. If a school lists a minimum, that's the school's rule. When schools move their old requirement to the new scale, ETS recommends these matches, and asks them to apply the same thinking to section minimums:

Old minimum (0-120)Recommended new minimum (1-6)
1005
904.5
804
703.5

ETS tells schools that asked for 100 to use 5, not 5.5, because a 5 covers old scores from 95 to 106.

Average TOEFL scores and percentiles

ETS's latest score data summary covers January to December 2023, on the old 0-120 scale. The mean total was 87: about 22 in Reading and Listening and about 21 in Speaking and Writing. By country, the US mean was 92, India 93 and China 86. Percentile ranks tell you the share of test takers who scored lower:

Old total (0-120)Percentile rank, 2023

10483
10073

These figures describe the test before January 21, 2026, so treat them as background, not as a target on the 1 to 6 scale.
