TOEFL Reading: what's in the section and how to practice

The Reading section has about 50 items in about 30 minutes, in three task types: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. It's adaptive, so your second part depends on how you do in the first. Good TOEFL reading practice covers all three, plus the vocabulary and word forms the first one tests.

Reading task types and items

Figures are from ETS's 2026 blueprint. Some items are unscored trials for future tests, and you can't tell which.

Task typeItemsWhat it asksCEFR range
Complete the Words30Finish words in an academic paragraph using spelling, word form and grammar cluesB1 to C1+
Read in Daily Life5-15Short everyday texts such as a sign, menu, email or social media post, in sets of 2 or 3 questionsA1 to C1
Read an Academic Passage5-15Main ideas, key details, inferences, how ideas connect and how the text is builtB1 to C2

How should TOEFL reading practice match the real section?

Texts run from 15 to 50 words for easier items up to about 200 words for harder ones, and the text stays on screen while you answer. Every scored Reading item is worth 1 point and scored by machine.

Reading is two-stage adaptive. ETS's blueprint gives the first part 18 to 21 minutes and the second part 9 minutes. Practice under time, and don't spend long on one item early on.

TOEFL vocabulary: what the test checks

ETS's blueprint doesn't give a word list. It describes skills instead: using word forms and grammar to fill gaps, understanding informal language and common idioms at B1 to B2, and connecting ideas across a longer text at C1 to C2. In Listening, academic talks can include less common or idiomatic words. So learn word families (decide, decision, decisive) and how words work in a sentence, not just definitions.
